Joyce talks with Vikas and Vidula Sukhatme about the economics of clinical trials, and their effort to test promising yet neglected therapies for cancer.

 

Did you know that there are hundreds of potentially helpful cancer therapies, some with an impressive bibliography of articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, that have not been approved because of the lack of funding for clinical trials to prove that they do or don’t work?

 

Dr. Vikas Sukhatme and his wife Vidula have formed a non-profit organization, which is currently staffed entirely by volunteers, focused on identifying promising, yet neglected cancer therapies for investigation, prioritizing them, conducting clinical trials, and educating patients, physicians, and the community about treatment options.

About Our Guests

 

Vikas P. Sukhatme received a PhD in physics from MIT and an MD from Harvard Medical School. He is a physician engaged in both basic science and patient-oriented research at Harvard, where he is the Victor J. Aresty Professor of Medicine. He is also Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine for Interdepartmental and Translational Programs at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston. His primary interest is in cancer research but his research has spanned such diverse areas as toxemia of pregnancy and sepsis.


Vidula Sukhatme holds an MS in mathematics from Northeastern University and an MS from the Harvard School of Public Health in epidemiology. Most recently, Ms. Sukhatme served as a project leader for designing and implementing a new web based Human Resources application at Children’s Hospital in Boston. She has also worked as a consultant on other implementation projects at Lahey Clinic, Burlington; Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston; Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago and University of Chicago Hospitals, Chicago. She has 20 years of experience in information systems in a healthcare environment.
