Robin and Mike have an enlightening discussion with Cora Connor, Founder of R. M. C. Inc. http://www.rmcsupport.org/, a grassroots non-profit established to provide information and support for those suffering with Renal Medullary Carcinoma. They talk about the rarity and lack of research and knowledge about this little-known cancer and how the collaboration of a worldwide group of doctors, researchers and advocates have led to the founding of the RMC Alliance to raise awareness and establish treatment standards and an active database to combat this disease.
Sickle cell disease is caused by a recessive gene. People who carry only one altered copy of the sickle cell gene are said to have the Sickle Cell Trait. Until the 1990’s it was thought that there was no health impact to having only one altered copy of the gene. We are learning that there can be health issues associated with Sickle Cell Trait, one of which is Renal Medullary Cancer.
