Dr. Gilbert Ross speaks with Mike and Joyce about stopping smoking, getting smoke and tar out of your life — even if you can’t kick nicotine — and reducing the harm that they inject into our bodies and our atmosphere.
Dr. Ross is Medical Director of the American Council on Science and Health in New York.
Tobacco is an addiction which is not easy to quit. Smokeless nicotine alternatives take away the tar but continue the nicotine. We talk about a number of strategies for stopping smoking and reducing the harm from smoke and tar.
Just getting the smoke and tar out of your life will significantly reduce your health risks, and eliminate the risks associated with second-hand smoke to others.
Dr. Ross suggests considering one of the smokeless tobacco products now on the market.
An electronic cigarette can be used with a “juice” containing nicotine, or not. It helps to satisfy the ritual of smoking — holding something in your hand, moving it from hand to mouth, etc.
Snus is a product invented in Sweden which is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. There are Snus products now made by a number of different manufacturers. They are small “tea bags” of tobacco that one places between teeth and gums, and which do not require spitting.
Nicotine addiction is not easy. Read Mike’s own story about quitting smoking: Breaking the habit
If your New Year’s resolutions include quitting smoking, but you have tried before and failed, consider just stepping downward to a smokeless tobacco product, perhaps as a first step toward eventually quitting altogether.
